Description
This self-portrait is a contemporary reflection on female identity, critiquing the algorithmic pressure on women to remain eternally young, skinny, and trend-obsessed. Inspired by Leonardo Da Vinci’s Lady with an Ermine, the image subverts historical portraiture to expose the suffocating nature of modern beauty regimes. Every prop serves as a clinical symbol of this digital trap. The cosmetic sheet mask represents de-individuation—the literal erasure of unique features in pursuit of a synthetic, commercialised ideal of flawless youth. In my arms, the traditional status symbol is replaced by a digital laboratory rat on a glowing screen, a metaphor for how women have become isolated test subjects in a hyper-monitored social experiment of consumerism and validation. Finally, the tailor’s measuring tape wrapped tightly around the throat acts as a physical noose, visualising the crushing, claustrophobia of societal body standards. Bathed in classical chiaroscuro lighting, the visual tone is deliberately playful yet deeply unsettling. Ultimately, the work questions our personal agency within this systemic cage, examining the exact moment women volunteered to become disciplined prisoners of their own curated objectification.
