Self Portrait

Mental health is a recurring theme throughout my work, often exploring the disparity between how we appear and how we feel. Here, a self-portrait constructed from individual pieces of air-drying clay and photographic water decals is held within an empty frame. Gold threads connect the fragments while simultaneously pulling them in different directions — reflecting those times when simply holding yourself together can feel like an achievement. I photographed the piece at sunrise on the coast, a place I return to for peace and healing. Its reflection in the rock pool creates another, less certain self beneath the surface.
