I grew up being the odd duckling, I couldn’t figure out why I thought and felt so different. I tried to hide or fighting. Now I refuse to change myself for the comfort of others. No more will I have tarred wings. Exploring the feelings of fight, flight or faking within autism. I spent most of my adolescence in three minds; fighting, running or hiding so that I might fit in and be accepted. I spent so long pretending, I became stuck without even knowing I had. It wasn’t until I learnt I was autistic that began to find out who I really was. It hurts my heart that the years I spent stuck in these feelings which caused not only pain and anguish but that it contributed to my diagnosis of Multiple Sclerosis. Learning that so many people with undiagnosed neurodiverse minds go on to develop chronic illnesses because of the stress we are put through without ever knowing why us.
