Portrait
Lazarim, Portugal
Canon R5
Diana and Letícia are two Cartões who take part in the pagan tradition, Entrudo de Lazarim, each year. Letícia’s father is an artisan who hand-carves the masks. I arranged to meet with them the day before the main carnival event to shoot their portrait. Entrudo masks conceal and transform, depicting devils and mythical creatures with masculine features. Diana and Letícia are a bold contrast, yet, as Cartões, they become deeply connected to their family’s tradition, craft, and identity.
