Portrait
Varanasi, India
Sony A7R V, Sony FE 24–70mm f/2.8 GM II
Photographed in Varanasi, India, in the early morning, this portrait shows a sadhu holding two real skulls beside his face while looking directly into the camera. The close, symmetrical framing was used to place his eyes between the skulls, connecting the portrait to ideas of mortality, devotion and ritual presence. The muted riverbank background keeps attention on the ash-covered skin, red markings and objects held in his hands. My intention was to create a direct portrait that reflects the intensity of the encounter without removing the human presence behind it. Camera settings: 1/250 sec, f/3.5, ISO 100, 52mm.
