Description

I’m really proud of this shot which I have been planning for at least three years - the weather had never aligned perfectly with the new moon but this year all looked ideal so I made the 3 hour drive down to this lighthouse hoping that the skies would stay clear all night long. Despite some low cloud threatening to ruin the panorama, it held off just long enough for me to complete both the foreground and sky panoramas. The foreground was taken at dusk, just as the first stars appeared so that the lighthouse could be captured and then the panorama of the Milky Way was captured a few hours later using an astromodified camera as well as shots with a narrowband filter to capture the h-alpha detail more clearly. Each panel of the foreground was exposure bracketed and focus stacked, and each panel of the sky was tracked and stacked to bring out more detail. They were then combined in photoshop to create the final image.
