As I was preparing images for an exhibition of my series, Still,Life, I took this quick shot, testing the proposed wall display. The series, actually of hundreds of portraits, was taken over 3 years at a nearby hospice where I provided a free portrait service for many individuals with life-limiting illnesses. These were often requested to be used in funerals and as gifts for loved ones (free prints were provided causing much interest on "reveal" days). It struck me that, until I prepared for an exhibition (with full written consent from all parties), I had very much up to that point, taken the individual portraits with a very clear focus on each individual. Looking at them as a group, I realised what a privilege I had been given to spend time with so many of these individuals. I framed the images, which were printed on acetate, in old film carriers, representing the transitory nature of life and the importance of printed images as memorials of the dead. Using the slide covers I was able to include direct quotes from those who participated in the project. Together, they reveal, humour, acceptance, resilience and honesty, for which I remain truly grateful. Shot at 150, ISO 64.
