I made this photograph in London in April 2020. Everything in the photograph is ordinary, yet something feels slightly surreal. The rose was a small, delicate dried flower from a bouquet I had received for my birthday a few months earlier. Its shadow, however, is much larger and sharper, almost seeming to exist in its own right. They belong together, but they are not the same. Something can disappear from our lives, yet its image can remain with us - sometimes becoming larger, clearer or more powerful in our minds than the original experience ever was.
