Description
Backlit by a dive torch, a developing Bull Huss shark (Scyliorhinus stellaris) embryo rests atop its large, round yolk sac inside a translucent egg case, commonly known as a "mermaid’s purse." Photographed in the coastal waters of Cornwall whilst snorkelling, the image highlights the fragile beginnings of marine life hidden within the UK's kelp forests. The long, spiraling tendrils at the top of the casing are naturally anchored to sea vegetation, safely securing the vulnerable embryo for its nine-month incubation.
