Description
A polar bear balances on the edge of a drifting iceberg in East Greenland, continuing the watchful hunting behaviour I had observed earlier while it was still on land, scanning the horizon and testing the air for scent. This image captures that same moment of focus and behaviour as it searches the surrounding sea ice for potential prey. I wanted the image to convey both the physical strength of the bear and the fragility of the platform beneath it. The emphasis on its enormous paws gives a sense of scale and weight, while its posture captures the concentration required to remain balanced as the iceberg moves beneath it. Photographed in East Greenland in 2025 using the 70mm zoom lens on a DJI Mavic 4 Pro drone. The image was captured from an aerial position with care taken not to influence or interrupt the bear’s behaviour. A tight crop was selected to fill the frame for impact, with the edges of the ice deliberately cropped to make the composition feel intentional rather than incidental.
