Description
An ultrarunner climbs through the night during The Hill Ultra on The Wrekin, Shropshire. Competitors repeatedly ascend and descend the hill 56 times, covering approximately 160 miles and 47,000ft of elevation. The extraordinary red light is entirely natural to the scene. A red beacon on the hill was illuminating the heavy mist, which carried and diffused the light across the landscape. The runner’s headtorch provided the only other illumination, picking out the wet trail beneath them. Photographed handheld on a Leica Q3 with a 28mm Summilux lens at ISO 6400, f/1.7 and 1/13 sec. Working at such a slow shutter speed allowed me to photograph using only the light that was already present rather than introducing any artificial lighting. My intention was to convey the isolation, repetition and strangeness of moving through the landscape deep into an ultramarathon. For a few seconds, the combination of mist, beacon and headtorch transformed The Wrekin into something almost otherworldly.
