Jigokudani, Japan
Nikon Z9, Nikor 400mm f2.8 TC
In Japan’s Jigokudani, or “Hell’s Valley”, Japanese macaques gather in the natural hot springs during the freezing winter months. As snow fell around them, this young macaque clung tightly to its mother while they rested together in the warm water. Photographing from close to the surface allowed me to concentrate on the youngster’s expression and the small hand gripping its mother’s wet fur. Surrounded by warmth and protected against her body, the young macaque appeared completely secure despite the cold conditions beyond the Onsen.
