Title: Born into Tradition While photographing the winter Bear Dance celebrations in Comănești, Romania, I noticed a young boy surrounded by performers wearing traditional bear costumes. As the dancers moved around him, the boy suddenly cried out. His expression seemed to echo the open jaws of the bears above him, and for a brief moment he became the emotional centre of the ritual. The Bear Dance is an ancient Romanian winter tradition associated with driving away evil spirits and welcoming renewal in the coming year. For me, this photograph is also about inheritance: a tradition passed from one generation to the next, with a child standing at its centre.
