Description
Clouds were my obvious inspiration for this one - as I always try to bring some of the cover to the final image. I built the scene for this one around the book, which simply stood on a little plinth. I nipped out to my local haberdashery on the hunt for some cushion stuffing - after much tweaking of the stuffing (8 large bags if I recall correctly) I'd carefully lit the shot using a couple of Godox flashes, creating light and shadow where I wanted it - and I wanted it to reflect the cover as closely as possible. I often use a method called gradient mapping in Photoshop where you take light and shadow and you can add colour to your gradient map in the image (which is how I added colour to the clouds here - the original frames were essentially black and white (or light and shadow) before the colour was added - I find it really effective. With some further dodge and burn in the specific areas it needed, I was again, very happy with how this one turned out. In fact, this shot led to me gaining further work at other publishing houses. The other thing about this shot I was really pleased with, was the close resemblance of the book coming through the clouds to the rocket going through the clouds on the cover image.
